Director. In 1964 James was one of the three founders of the Everyman Theatre Liverpool along with Martin Jenkins and Terry Hands. In 1971 joined the Royal National Theatre at Young Vic as Associate Director alongside Laurence Oliver and Peter Hall. From 1974-1981 James was director of Crucible Theatre, Sheffield before becoming director of the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith from 1981-1992. He served as Principal of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) from 1994-2010. He was awarded a CBE in in 2011 for his contribution to the arts. In September 2012 he was appointed Head of Theatre Directing at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.
