Actor. Widely regarded as one of the most popular, versatile supporting actors on the British stage, Normington trained as an opera singer at the Northern School of Music in Manchester. Following his repertory work at the Library Theatre (Manchester) and the Oxford Playhouse, Normington joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1962, performing with the company regularly over the next three years and appearing as Flute in Peter Hall's RSC film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1968. Normington appeared in a range of classical and contemporary stage roles at the Royal Court, the Bush, Almeida, and particularly at the National Theatre. Rejoining the RSC after 25 years in 1993 he appeared in Robert Stephens' King Lear and Katie Mitchell's production of Ibsen's Ghosts. While there, he originated the role of Grove in Stephen Poliakoff's Talk of the City (1998). Normington made his final stage appearance just a few months before his death as Archie's father in John Osborne's The Entertainer at the Old Vic.
