Actor. Following his training at Central School of Speech and Drama in London, winning its gold medal, Bate's professional acting career began with repertory companies in Worthing, Shanklin and Bournemouth. Now, he is perhaps best remembered for his roles in film and television espionage dramas including appearing as the double agent Kim Philby in Philby, Burgess and Maclean (1977), as civil servant Oliver Lacon in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Arthur Hopcraft's seven-part adaptation of John le Carré's novel (1979), and Game, Set and Match (1988) based on Len Deighton's trilogy. As well as acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1969 and on London's West End, much of Bate's career was spent in television, appearing in more than 100 roles.
