Theatre designer. Cockayne became an apprentice designer at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow after leaving art school on Birmingham. He spent six years as Head of Design at Manchester Library Theatre (1973-79). He taught Theatre Design at The Nottingham Trent University (1980 to 1995). He has acted as Resident Designer at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Liverpool Playhouse, Greenwich Theatre, Theatr Clwyd.
