Born: 13 June 1921

Director. Britain’s most prominent advocate of theatre-in-the-round. Joseph was a tutor at CSSD when he met and made an impression on a young Harold Pinter, who studied there in 1951. He established the Studio Theatre Ltd company to pursue the exploration of theatre-in-the-round and adopted the concert room in the Central Library at Scarborough as a base. In 1962, they relocated to Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent, and converted a former cinema to the Victoria Theatre. Joseph later was appointed a lecturer in the Department of Drama at the University of Manchester.

In 1996, The Stephen Joseph Theatre, named in his memory, was opened as a theatre-in-the-round in a converted cinema.
