Actor and writer, predominantly for television. After gaining acting parts in repertory theatre (and a West End debut in Pinter's A Night Out), Bewes gravitated towards screen acting, and got parts in 1962 in Dixon of Dock Green (BBC: 1955-76) and Z-Cars in 1963 (BBC: 1962-78), before getting a role in the film Billy Liar (John Schlesinger, 1963). His television career flourished and he is best remembered as playing the long-suffering Bob Ferris, an aspirational middle-class character from a working-class background, in the BBC comedies The Likely Lads (1964-6) and Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? (1973-4).
