119 Gorbals St, Glasgow, Lanarkshire G5 9DS, Scotland
Date Opened: 1965
The Close Theatre, a 150-seat studio theatre based in the dance hall adjoining the Glasgow Citizens Theatre, was established in 1965. As a members only club theatre, the Close was able to circumvent the strictures of theatre censorship (until its abolition in 1968) and was designed to encourage the writing and presentation of new and experimental plays as well as reconfigurations of well known classic texts or lesser-known works by major writers. With a members' bar and restaurant, it also quickly became a popular night-life destination. It was, however, a short-lived enterprise; the Close was destroyed by fire in 1973.
