The oldest continually-operating theatre in the English speaking world, Theatre Royal was built during 1764–66 on King Street in Bristol. It was opened in 1766 and rebuilt from 1970 to 1972. The seating capacity, increased in 2012, is 540. Theatre Royal is publicly funded by Arts Council England and Bristol City Council.
