Greenwich Theatre (Est. 1969)

Greenwich Theatre

6 Croom's Hill, London SE10 8ES, England

Date Opened: 21 October 1969   Confidence Level

A local theatre located in Croom's Hill close to the centre of Greenwich in south-east London. Seating capacity is 429 around an open thrust stage. The venue was rebuilt in 1871 and 1898, and then closed in 1949 after an incendiary bomb crashed through the roof into the auditorium during WW II. In 1962 Greenwich Council bought the site for demolition, but Ewan Hooper, a local actor and director, rallied local support so that a new building was designed, by architect Brian Meeking, within the old shell and it eventually reopened as the Greenwich Theatre in 1969. It had to survive a further crisis in the late 1990s prompted by the 1997 withdrawal of its annual subsidy from the London Arts Board. It eventually reopened in November 1999.

The theatre stands on the site of the Rose and Crown Music Hall built in 1855 on Crooms Hill at the junction with Nevada Street. But it takes its name from the New Greenwich Theatre built in 1864 by Sefton Parry on London Street, opposite what was then the terminus of the London and Greenwich Railway.

Betrayal (Greenwich Theatre) (1982)

It is uncertain if this production was performed at the Greenwich Theatre or at all in the UK; The Greenwich is believed to be the producing theatre for a British Council / London Shakespeare Group tour of this play overseas, though this may be an assumption derived from the production there of 1983 (See Linked Productions). The earliest performance of this production that can be found is on 10 October 1982, at the Victoria Theatre, Singapore. Performances took in Japan 1982, Tokyo – Sun. 14 Nov. 2pm and 6pm at Kubo-kodo Hall; sat. 20 Nov. a 2.30 and 6.30 at Koto-ku Bunka Centre Hall supported by the Japan-British Society – and Nara –Tues. 30 Nov. at 6.30 pm at Nara-shi Shiseki Bunka Centre Hall; promoted by Ken-Ichi Watanabe. The 1983 production at the Greenwich Theatre seems to be the same production with some changes to personnel. (See Linked Productions)
