Harold Pinter
Prose (fiction)
English
An autobiographical novel, Pinter explores the nature of trust and betrayal in friendship, based on his experiences as part of a group of friends in the Hackney of his youth. The novel was composed between 1952 and 1956, but not published until 1990. Pinter revisited the manuscript in 1989 and prepared it for publication. In an author's note in the published novel he clarifies: 'I cut five chapters which seemed to me redundant and reorganised or condensed a number of other passages.' The original manuscript can be consulted in the Pinter archive of the British Library. It was adapted into a BBC Radio play in 1960; and a version was staged at the New Arts Theatre (London) in 1963. Much later, a fuller adaptation of the novel was written by Kerry Lee Crabbe and first staged in 2002.
