Actor, novelist and activist. York worked extensively in film and television and in theatre. She had a prolific career on screen, 'The 1960s [proving] to be a golden period for her during which she was to become one of the decade's most memorable faces.' (Guardian website). From the late seventies onward, York developed a robust career as a stage actress. Her involvement in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and support of Mordechai Vanunu, the Israeli dissident who exposed Israel's nuclear weapons programme, linked her to Harold Pinter.
