Stage, television, film and radio actor and playwright. Grainger worked in rep in Scotland before joining the Old Vic company under Laurence Olivier in 1972. Much of his stage career has been based in London and at the National theatre. He has authored a number of plays, including Four to One (1976), Vamp Till Ready (1978), Lies in Plastic Smiles (1979) and Paradise Lost (1980). He is one of very few actors who have acted beside Pinter in a Pinter play, have been directed by Pinter in a Pinter play and have been directed by Pinter in a play by a different author.
