Actor. Bates worked extensively in theatre, film and television. In a career spanning over 40 years, Bates triumphed equally in all three mediums. While on occasion Bates acted in classics, he was a leading interpreter, on stage and screen, of the new wave of dramatic writing which heralded the renaissance of modern drama in the post-war British theatre and continued into the 1960s and 70s.

Bates's final performance was 7 February 1976. Michael Gambon took over the role on 9 February. Also, the 31 July entry in Pinter's appointment diary for 1976 indicates ‘Last Night O E Cast’ and the 2 August entry indicates ‘1st night new O E Cast’. The new cast was likely the one that went on to New York.
