Description | An excerpt from The Birthday Party is included in a collection of staged pieces before a live audience. The excerpt chosen was of Goldberg and McCann's interrogation of Stanley in Act Two of the play, from 'Take off his glasses' to 'He doesn't know' following Stanley's scream (pp. 43-46, The Birthday Party, in Plays 1 (London: Faber ad Faber, 1991). The excerpt closes the broadcast. The previous excerpts are: The Chorus of the Secret Police, from Christopher Logue's 1962 Television adaptation of Sophocles' Antigone; the Elizabethan play of unknown author, Arden of Faversham; William Shakespeare's The Two Gentleman of Verona; the feast of Crispian speech from Shakespeare's Henry V; Hamlet addressing the players from Shakespeare's Hamlet; the 1642 decree that sports and playgoing should be suspended; Moilère's That Scoundrel Scapin; and the train scene from Under the Gaslight by Augustin Daly. |
