John Bury (1925 - 2000)

Designer. Designing for sets, costume and lighting Bury worked primarily in theatre, on the West End and Broadway, and national and international opera (including works at Glyndebourne and Covent Garden). From 1946 to 1963 Bury worked with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, initially as an actor and later as Theatre Royal Stratford East's resident designer (where his work included the seminal production of Oh! What a Lovely War in 1963). From 1963-1968 he was Head of Design at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) where he played a key role in the design of the Barbican Theatre. In 1968 he moved to the National Theatre where he was Head of Design until 1985.
