Designer. A costume designer, Dawson career initially began designing for the stage but later worked prolifically in film. Her work on the 1952 film The Pickwick Papers based on Charles Dickens's original novel was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design (Black and White). Dawson was also nominated for two British Film Awards in 1965 and again in 1974. In her book, Women in British Cinema, Sue Harper describes Dawson's style as 'flamboyant' and 'marvellously inventive' (Harper, (2000), p.215), particularly in period pieces such as 1952 film adaptation of The Importance of Being Ernest.
