Director and actor. Mackintosh worked in television, theatre and film. His career began in the mid 1950s at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, Bristol Old Vic and Birmingham Rep. Becoming well known after the war in repertory theatres and on television, Mackintosh joined the National Theatre in 1964 as an actor. In the capacity of Staff Director there, he worked with more than 40 different directors, and was the only actor or director to have maintained a continuous working relationship with the theatre since its inception under Laurence Olivier in the 1960s (Guardian website).
