Actor. Well-known for his work on television, McKenna first appeared on stage at the Pike Theatre Dublin in 1953 before appearing with Anew McMaster's Shakespearean company at the Gaiety Theatre in 1954 where he played Horatio in Hamlet and Albany in King Lear. He went on to join the Abbey Theatre, remaining with the company for eight years during its interim period at the Queen's theatre, Dublin. In 1963 he traveled to London with a production of Stephen D, Hugh Leonard's conflation of two James Joyce books, produced for the Gate theatre. He would remain in London for the majority of his career appearing regularly on the West End, at the Royal Court, Nottingham Playhouse, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). On screen, McKenna appeared in a variety of popular television dramas including Callan, Lovejoy, Minder, Inspector Morse, Doctor Who and The Sweeney and in a number of films including Ulysses (1967), and A Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man (1977).
