Actor. Beginning her career in London's fringe theatres, Barber appeared in new plays by contemporary writers such as Snoo Wilson's Spaceache at the Tricycle Theatre (1980), and Doug Lucie's Hard Feelings and Brain Thompson's Turning Over, both at the Bush Theatre in 1983. She joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1984 and over a two year period gained great critical acclaim in roles such as Ophelia opposite Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet and as Marguerite Gautier in Pam Gem's Camille for which she was nominated for the Olivier Award for Most Promising Newcomer of the Year in Theatre in 1985. In 1987 she appeared as Viola in Branagh's production of Twelfth Night at London's Riverside Studios alongside films such as Stephen Frears' Prick Up Your Ears (1987) and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987). Barber has also appeared in a number of award-winning productions with the National Theatre including starring as Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion (1992) and as Sonya in Uncle Vanya for which she was nominated for the Olivier Award for for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1997. She returned to the RSC in 2007 as Goneril opposite Sir Ian McKellen's King Lear and as Arkadina in The Seagull. She is also known for her work in television such as the popular BBC drama Silk (2011-2014).
