Playwright, composer, director, actor and singer. His theatre work includes Hay Fever (1925), Private Lives (1930), Design for Living (1932), Blithe Spirit (1941), and Present Laughter (1942). He was knighted in 1969.

Coward put up £1000 to help Clive Donner adapt Harold Pinter's play The Caretaker into a film (1963).
