Actor for stage and screen. Hurt’s international reputation was built over five decades as a performer of suffering roles, notably John Merrick in The Elephant Man (David Lynch, 1980), Winston Smith in 1984 (Michael Radford, 1984) and Kane, the unfortunate officer in the science fiction film Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979) who suffered the attachment of a face-hugger and the consequent iconic chest-bursting sequence. He was cast as Krapp in Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s last Tape for the 2001 ‘Beckett on Film’ season. In 2013 he was cast as the ‘War Doctor’ in the long-running British Science-fiction TV series Doctor Who.
