Actor and playwright. Mackay is best remembered for his role as the log suffering but determined prison officer Mr. Mackay in the 1970s BB television situation comedy Porridge (1973-77). His career began at the Citizens theatre in Glasgow, where he played numerous roles between 1949 and 1958. He went on to work at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, before building up a portfolio of television work in the 1970s.
