Television producer, who presented the BBC Television programme Tonight until 1961. From 1961 he was the BBC’s Assistant Controller of Programmes (television). In 1963 he became Controller of Programmes for BBC1. He asked Sydney Newman to develop a new Saturday evening entertainment show for BBC1. This was the long-running science fiction drama Doctor Who (1964 - ).
