Playwright. Mercer began writing for television in the early 1960s. His first stage play, Ride a Cock Horse, was produced in 1965. Much of his work was premiered by the Royal Shakespeare Company. His plays include Where the Difference Begins (1961), A Way of Living (1963), Ride a Cock Horse (1965), Belcher's Luck (1966), After Haggerty (1970), Flint (1970), Duck Song (1974) and The Ragazza (1978).
