The novel follows Axel Heyst from England to Southeastern Asia as he attempts to distance himself from a difficult home life. The novel's narrative goes through four stages: the first section is from the viewpoint of a sailor, the second from an omniscient perspective of Heyst, the third from Heyst's interior perspective and the fourth has an omniscient narrator.
