Actor and comedian. Walters's career in the theatre began in the mid-1970s. Her association with writer and comic performer Victoria Wood was established in the 1980s with the television sketch comedy shows Wood and Walters (ITV, 1981-2), Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV (BBC2, 1985-7) and continued in various collaborations and appearances, including Dinnerladies (BBC, 1998-2000). International audiences know Walters from her appearances as Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter film series (2001-11), Rosie Mulligan in Mamma Mia (Phyllida Lloyd, 2008) and as Susan 'Rita' White opposite Michael Caine in Educating Rita (Lewis Gilbert, 1983). She had been the first actor to play the latter role in the stage premiere of the original play by Willy Russell at the Donmar Theatre in 1980.
