The Courtyard theatre is the larger of the two main performance spaces at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The Leeds Playhouse, as it was then called, was originally located on the south grounds of the University of Leeds Campus, adjoined to the University sports hall. In 1990 it moved to a purpose built theatre with two venues on Quarry Hill, Leeds and was renamed the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The Courtyard Theatre may have taken its name from the courtyard that was a central feature of the Quarry Hill flats project that had been demolished. The theatre reverted to its original name in 2018 after a refurbishment and additional build.
