Mr Simon Gray (Male)

Nationality: English

Author

Born: 21 October 1936   Confidence Level

Died: 7 August 2008

Playwright, novelist, diarist. Simon Gray was Lecturer in English Literature at Queen Mary's London when his career as a writer began in 1963. He began writing for television, and subsequently the stage. Harold Pinter directed eight of Simon Gray's plays - the only writer for whom he would regularly perform this function. The relationship began with the 1971 production fo Gray's Butley, which was subsequently made into a film, also directed by Pinter. Gray's Old Masters (2004) was the last production for the stage that Pinter was ever to direct. Gray's friendship and professional relationship with Harold Pinter is detailed in many accounts across Gray's diaries and memoirs, though his account of their work together on The Common Pursuit (1984) was the cause of a temporary falling out.
